Business Simulation
Most managers and executives are hired for their specialized skills. Businesses need those skills, but they also need astute business people with the ability to understand the interactions between all parts of the business. The best business people have a blend of technical expertise plus business acumen.
Capstone simulates all aspects of management: strategy & tactics, policy, production, accounting, marketing, finance, quality control, human resources, leadership and teamwork – providing a complete immersion experience in the complexities of running a business.
The Capstone business simulation is ideal for executives, managers with some years of experience, supervisors being groomed for the next level, and for all senior management and executive teams. It is used in strategic management retreats, business acumen training, and as a stand-alone management training event. It is also effective in broad leadership training and team building programs that require a ‘capstone’ seminar to synthesize the learning from individual teaching modules.
The class breaks into teams with each team running their $100 million company in head-to-head competition with their peers. At the end of each round of the simulation, the class meets to debrief the last round providing a powerful opportunity for the instructor to shape the seminar to each clients’ learning goals. The debriefs can focus on finance, strategy, team dynamics, operations management, or a combination of topics, determined by the clients’ needs.
The essence of the Capstone business simulation experience is to choose a strategy and implement it with total focus. It sounds simple, but execution is tough in a constantly changing marketplace, with savvy competitors, customers demanding cheaper, better products, five different market segments, and the challenges of team decision making. Decisions are made in a time constrained, high pressure environment, often with a team of people participants have not worked with before. The seminar mirrors, as closely as possible, the experience of being part of a senior management team in a highly competitive business.
Because each company determines its own strategic direction, each team sets its own benchmarks for success, choosing from Return on Equity (ROE), Return on Sales (ROS), Market Capitalization, Market Share (in Dollars), Cumulative Profit, Return on Assets (ROA), Asset Turnover and Stock Price. The flexible scoring system means any corporate strategy can win – if properly executed.
