Foundation in Corporate Training

Foundation is the ideal tool for providing business people, early in their career, with a holistic experience of business that demonstrates how their professional expertise or individual department fits within the broader business context. With its emphasis on finance and the integration of individual business units, Foundation provides a solid framework for understanding core processes and cross functional decision-making.

Foundation targets associates, newer hires, supervisors, functional and newly promoted general managers. Foundation is also appropriate for more senior audiences where the time allocated for their simulation experience is strictly limited.

Foundation ensures balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements become functional tools as participants use them round by round to draw out relevant information on the impact of their own decisions and on the state of their competitor’ companies. The numbers begin to reflect real situations and events. A management team with poor results feels the competitive pressure keenly – it is no longer just red ink on a page. Financial ratios such as Return or Sales or Asset Turnover become intensely relevant as participants target benchmarks that will measure their company’s success.

The simulation tool is completely online which provides the flexibility to offer Foundation in face-to-face seminars (with a minimum 1.5 days); completely online (with a minimum of two week time frame); or as part of a hybrid instructional design, part face-to-face and part online.

To satisfy a range of learning goals and the work schedules of professionals in many different industries, the simulation can be managed:

  • as a team Tournament competition: four to six teams per simulation, each running a company and competing head-to-head, or
  • as a Foot race, in which simulated companies are managed by an individual CEO competing against five computer-generated companies.

Success is not predetermined but predicated on each simulated company delivering on the targets set by the management team.  Each team or individual CEO selects their own benchmarks for success, choosing from Return on Equity (ROE), Return on Sales (ROS), Market Capitalization, Market Share (in Dollars), Cumulative Profit, Return on Assets (ROA), Asset Turnover and Stock Price – depending on which ratios best reflect the company’s goals.

' I have attended various business simulations and this was the most valuable one. The model was complex enough to have the team understand key concepts yet simple enough to not get in the way of the learning process itself. The simulation heightened my understanding of the interaction of all aspects of a business operation. '
