The Strategy Capstone
The last course before graduation is the first with no right answer.

Every business program saves one course for last. At the University of North Alabama, it's Strategic Management, the capstone where finance, marketing, operations, and strategy are supposed to stop being separate subjects. Justin Carter teaches it. "It's the final class that people have to take in their business degree," he says. "I stand between them and graduation."
Carter came to that seat from industry, with 25 years in operations and consulting behind him. His standard for the course follows from it: "I want everything that I do to be practical. They are months away, sometimes weeks away, from starting their job."
The first course with no answer key
Four years of school teach students to find the right answer. Work doesn't have one.

That's why the course runs on a business simulation. Student teams run a company against each other across multiple rounds, with the same incomplete information a real market gives them. Carter can't hand out a solution, because there isn't one.

Most of the coaching he does is strategy discipline. When teams bring him questions, the majority trace to the same root: they haven't decided what they're trying to accomplish. Are you going niche, low end, or specialty? Once a team gets clear on that, he says, everything else falls into place. He plays the role he knows from consulting: give advice, then step back and let them run the business.
Graded the way work grades you
Carter's capstone is graded on performance — how the company actually did, measured against every other team in the class. For most students that's new, and he treats the discomfort as part of the curriculum.

He pairs the pressure with a promise: the simulation is a safe place to feel it. "This is going to be one of the rare opportunities you get to play with something where there are no real consequences. Take advantage of it." At the end, each student answers for the company on their own through Comp-XM, so every graduate leaves with evidence of what they can do.
He ran it as a student. Then in industry. Now he teaches with it.
Carter didn't adopt the simulation on a vendor's word. He ran it as a UNA undergraduate, again in his MBA — in the same course he now teaches, taught by the professor he succeeded — and a third time in industry, running an executive development program for a Birmingham construction company. When the capstone became his, keeping the simulation wasn't a question.
Three weeks into the real world
The proof Carter keeps is a message from a student who had just graduated, three weeks into a data-analysis internship. Her team was handed a vague, high-stakes project on day one: improve a process, huge amounts of data, no clear expectations.
At first I panicked... There were no clear answers. I can't thank you enough for the concepts that you teach, the critical analysis, the practice, the simulation experience. The professor who studies the experience
Carter's relationship with the simulation goes one level deeper: he publishes research on it. His work tracks psychological capital — hope, optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy — round by round through the simulation, along with team psychological safety and flow. The finding: different things matter at different moments. Safety carries the early rounds, resilience carries the middle, and a small dose of encouragement at round three can turn a struggling team around; by round six, the window has closed. His chapter appears in a positive-psychology handbook, with further work under review. The capstone is where his students learn to decide, and where he studies how deciding is learned.
