Capsim alternatives, compared
Capsim vs. Cesim vs. Marketplace vs. Hubro: compared course by course.
This page compares Capsim, Cesim, Marketplace Simulations and Hubro by course fit, individual assessment, delivery and pricing. All four build business simulations for business schools. They differ in what the catalog is built around, how each student is assessed, and where a price is published.
The useful comparison is by course, not by brand. The right product, and how it's configured, depends on the course you teach.
So each course below gets its own comparison, including where a competitor fits better. A separate section covers buying through Harvard Business Publishing, where many faculty shop. Competitor details come from their public sites, checked on October 20, 2026.

Introductory business
First course · non-majors · workshopsWhere the difference isCapsim's introductory simulation is the capstone engine with most of the complexity switched off. CapsimCore and Capstone share controls and reports, so a department can start students on one and move them to the other later. Marketplace's, Cesim's and Hubro's introductory titles are built for the level: Business Primer runs four quarters in two to four hours, Firm and Service are written for non-majors, and Hubro Business runs from a three-hour bootcamp to a full course. For a functional intro, CapsimCore gives the whole-company view, and the Gateway inbox series adds short individual exercises that fit the syllabus without redesigning it.
- Capsim
- CapsimCore run light: two market segments, one product to start, onboarding in about twenty minutes, from a four-hour workshop to a full term. It is the same engine as Capstone, earlier in the industry's life. Functional courses that need the whole-company view (accounting, HR, marketing) can run it too. For Intro to Management, Marketing, Accounting, Finance or Microeconomics, there is also an individual option: the Gateway Courses series gives each course eight standalone inbox simulations of about fifteen minutes.
- Cesim
- Firm, a manufacturing company with international operations, positioned for "business skills courses for non-business majors" and introductory courses for majors. Service, a family hotel in a seasonal market, for advanced secondary and undergraduate courses.
- Marketplace
- Business Primer (four quarters, two to four hours of play, "novices, even non-majors or high school seniors") and Business Fundamentals, which adds marketing and sales decisions. Both play against classmates or the computer.
- Hubro
- Hubro Business: teams of one to three run a jetpack manufacturer quarter by quarter for three to ten hours, against classmates or AI-run companies. Positioned for a first-year introduction to business course, and for management, accounting and microeconomics courses. In English, Norwegian and Swedish.
Strategy fundamentals
First strategy course · second or third yearWhere the difference isCapsim configures one simulation to the course: CapsimCore in full configuration carries the first strategy course with the reports and modules the capstone will use later. Marketplace's two titles are six-quarter games built for this level, and Cesim positions Global Challenge from this course up through the capstone, on the same platform as its other titles. Hubro's Strategic Management is built for this course too. Hubro's own FAQ says it and Capstone serve different courses, and that's fair: the Capsim simulation for a first strategy course is CapsimCore. Hubro builds named frameworks (PESTEL, SWOT, the BCG matrix) and written strategy exercises into its case, in four to twelve hours. CapsimCore shares its reports and modules with Capstone, so a department can carry students from this course to the capstone on the same controls.
- Capsim
- CapsimCore in full configuration: proforma reports, HR and TQM, and the case modules switched on. It carries a strategy fundamentals course with the same reports and modules as Capstone, in about three-quarters of Capstone's time. Up to eight rounds, each a year.
- Cesim
- Global Challenge is positioned for "strategy, international business, and capstone courses at advanced undergraduate and graduate levels." For an earlier course, Firm.
- Marketplace
- Introduction to Business and Strategy: six quarters of 60 to 75 minutes, for "second or third year undergraduate students in first time courses designed around strategy and policy." Strategic Management: six quarters of 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Hubro
- Strategic Management: built on the Hubro Business case, with PESTEL, SWOT and BCG matrix analyses, written strategy exercises and a Balanced Scorecard the instructor can reweight. Four to twelve hours in groups of two to four, for introductory strategic management courses with business or non-business students. Harvard Business Publishing lists it at six hours.
Strategic management capstone
Advanced undergraduate · the integrating courseWhere the difference isCapsim, Cesim and Marketplace each position a whole-company simulation for the capstone, with team performance results. The differences are the shape of the problem and the individual assessment. Capstone's round is a year and decisions are set at policy level, the way a leadership team sets them, across five segments and up to eight products. Marketplace's rounds are quarters, with formal planning templates and a stakeholder variant as options. Cesim's Global Challenge adds three regions and an instructor-enabled ESG module. For assessing each student, compare what the student does: Comp-XM is a solo re-run of the simulation with board questions; Marketplace's COLA is a closed-book test on the team's position.
- Capsim
- Capstone: five market segments, up to eight products, up to eight competition rounds plus up to four practice rounds, two to ten companies per industry. Scored by Stars, Success Measures and the Balanced Scorecard, with a Triple-Bottom-Line mode. Individual assessment with Comp-XM at the end.
- Cesim
- Global Challenge: a global technology company across three regions with different currencies, taxes, tariffs and regulations. The instructor can switch on integrated environmental, social and governance decisions, with a sustainability report. Twelve languages.
- Marketplace
- Four capstone titles: Strategic Management (six quarters), Strategy and Business Policy (formal OST planning templates), Business Management (eight quarters), and Integrated Business Management (eight to twelve quarters of three to three and a half hours). Conscious Capitalism adds stakeholder and sustainability decisions.
- Hubro
- Hubro positions Strategic Management for introductory strategy courses and also lists business policy, MBA strategy modules and executive education among its uses. Its FAQ says Strategic Management and Capstone serve different courses.
If sustainability is a central learning objective. Cesim's Global Challenge has an instructor-enabled ESG module with integrated decisions and a sustainability report. Marketplace's Conscious Capitalism is built around stakeholder decisions. Hubro's Sustainable Business scores teams on equity and an ESG index, with an optional carbon tax. Capstone's Triple-Bottom-Line mode scores people, planet and profit equally, with sustainability decisions through R&D, production, HR and finance. Compare which decisions students make, how those decisions move results, and what the reports show.
International strategy
International business · global strategyWhere the difference isCesim's Global Challenge spans three regions, international taxation and twelve languages. Marketplace's International Corporate Management adds exchange-rate and demand shocks across regions to an eight-quarter capstone with up to five market segments. CapsimGlobal narrows the problem to the decisions an international strategy course turns on: whether to enter, when, and where to put the plant, with a domestic business that could absorb all the capital on its own. Students who have run Capstone step straight into those questions; students new to strategy need more rounds.
- Capsim
- CapsimGlobal: a domestic company that can enter Germany, China or both. One plant, chosen in Round 1 and kept, sets labor cost, shipping, tariffs and defect rates for every market; exchange rates move every year. Two segments in up to three countries.
- Cesim
- Global Challenge: three global regions "with different customer preferences, growth rates, currencies, taxes, tariffs, and regulations," two production areas, international taxation and capital structure decisions. Twelve languages.
- Marketplace
- International Corporate Management builds on Strategic Corporate Management with "unstable economic and political situations causing exchange rates and demand fluctuations across international regions," and up to five market segments. Eight quarters of four to five hours, 20 to 40 students. Through Harvard Business Publishing it is listed at 36 hours with a published per-student price.
- Hubro
- No international business title on the pages read. Strategic Management includes market-entry decisions.
Operations and supply chain
Operations management · supply chain · logisticsWhere the difference isMarketplace has the larger supply-chain catalog, five supply-chain, channel and operations titles, and its supplier-and-reseller design is the one to look at for a channel or negotiation course. CapsimOps is the choice when the course wants operations decided inside a whole company, where a sourcing decision changes demand and a training decision changes cycle time.
- Capsim
- CapsimOps: the whole company with the operations problems switched on. Seven operations initiatives (sourcing, process and product quality, inventory control, three workforce programs) move nine performance measures, and teams still run marketing and finance, so an operational advantage has to be sold and paid for.
- Cesim
- No whole-company operations simulation appears on the catalog page read. Supply chain is one of the microsimulation topics.
- Marketplace
- Operations Management (four rounds), Fundamentals of Supply Chain Management (students split into suppliers and resellers who negotiate), Fundamentals of Channel Management, Xtreme Supply Chain Management and Supply Chain and Channel Management.
- Hubro
- No operations or supply-chain title on the pages read.
MBA and executive
MBA capstone · EMBA · corporate cohortsWhere the difference isMarketplace's MBA titles run 32 to 40 hours of play, and 48 to 60 in the extended editions. All four vendors list executive or corporate use, so for an executive program the comparison is what the vendor wraps around the simulation. Capsim's Leadership Accelerator adds facilitation, case modules drawn from the company's own situation, and pre/post measures. For an MBA capstone, Capsim's individual exam at the end is what several schools report as their program's outcome measure.
- Capsim
- Capstone or CapsimGlobal. A two-day seminar runs a practice round and five competition rounds; a semester runs eight. The same simulations run corporate cohorts as the Leadership Accelerator, a facilitated program with case modules drawn from the company's own situation.
- Cesim
- Global Challenge, used in Executive MBA programs and in-house corporate training; Bank, Power and Connect for advanced courses, executive programs and in-house training in banking, utilities and telecom.
- Marketplace
- Strategic Corporate Management, International Corporate Management and Advanced Strategic Corporate Management: eight quarters of four to five hours, 32 to 40 hours of gameplay (extended editions run up to twelve quarters), 20 to 40 students per game with parallel games for larger classes. Its site describes use in executive programs and lists corporate clients.
- Hubro
- Strategic Management lists MBA strategy modules, executive education and corporate learning among its uses. Corporate training runs facilitated or self-paced, individually or in teams.
Through Harvard
Buying simulations through Harvard Business Publishing
Harvard Business Publishing, now branded Harvard Business Impact Education, sells more than 100 simulations: short focused simulations it publishes and longer ones from partner publishers, Marketplace and Hubro among them. Every product shows a per-student price, with a lower rate for degree-granting courses, and a free Educator Account opens a "Try Now" tab on each one. Cesim's simulations aren't in the catalog.
What the catalog has, by course
Harvard-published · partner titles- Introductory business
- Short single-topic simulations such as New Venture Simulation: The Food Truck Challenge (30 minutes), plus Marketplace's Business Fundamentals and Hubro's Introduction to Business.
- Strategy
- Harvard-published simulations of 30 minutes to two hours on one concept each (The Five Forces, Value Champion, Back Bay Battery), and partner titles: Hubro's Strategic Management (six hours, also in an AI Grading edition) and MEGA Learning's Global Customer Value Challenge (23 hours).
- Capstone
- Partner capstones: MEGA Learning's Global Customer Value Challenge and the Marketplace titles.
- International
- Two titles: International Business Simulation: Market Entry (one hour) and Marketplace's International Corporate Management (36 hours).
- Operations
- Thirteen simulations of 30 minutes to two hours, including Benihana, the Root Beer Game, Global Supply Chain Management, and process-capacity and queueing exercises.
- Executive
- Corporate programs through Harvard Business Impact.
Why Capsim
Three reasons to consider Capsim
- 01Continuity across Capsim courses.
CapsimCore, Capstone, CapsimGlobal and CapsimOps share the round cycle, the reports and the cross-functional decisions. A department running a strategy sequence can carry students from the first course to the capstone on the same controls, building on what they already know as the simulation gets more demanding.
For a standalone course, compare workload, decision coverage and assessment.
- 02A separate individual simulation and assessment.
Team results can't stand in for each student's learning. Comp-XM has each student run the simulation alone and answer the board's questions, which require reading competitors' annual reports as well as their own, scored against the Big 7 learning goals. CapsimInbox-XM does it through a board-meeting inbox in one to two hours.
Business schools publish Comp-XM results as their AACSB assurance-of-learning measure.
- 03Published research on Capsim in use.
A 2021 study in the Journal of Education for Business analyzed 7,347 Capstone participants, suggested an optimal team size of four, and found better team performance in competition mode than in a footrace. A twelve-year study of 924 students found no statistically significant difference in measured team simulation performance across live, online and hybrid delivery. A university used Comp-XM to review graduate business outcomes across five successive course sessions.
Fit
When a competitor is the better fit
Capsim builds whole-company simulations and the assessments around them. Several good courses need something else.
- Marketplace SimulationsA dedicated team-based marketing, supply-chain, channel or entrepreneurship simulation.
Marketplace sells team simulations built for those courses: Introduction to Marketing, Strategic Marketing, Venture Strategy, four supply-chain and channel titles. Capsim has no dedicated team-based marketing or entrepreneurship title. Its whole-company simulations put marketing decisions alongside R&D, production and finance, the Gateway series adds short individual marketing exercises, and CapsimOps covers operations inside a whole company rather than the supply chain as its own game.
- CesimAn industry-specific course, or a class taught in another language.
Cesim runs simulations set in a hotel, a bank, a telecom operator, a power utility, a retail chain and a car dealership, and Global Challenge is offered in twelve languages. Capsim's standard simulations use a deliberately generic product, a sensor, so that attention stays on the decisions; industry-specific builds are custom work for companies.
- HubroA finance, managerial accounting or digital marketing course.
Hubro offers dedicated titles for these courses, with AI grading in selected simulations and editions. Capsim's whole-company simulations integrate finance and marketing with the other business functions, and the Gateway series provides short individual exercises for introductory accounting, finance and marketing.
- Harvard Business PublishingOne class session on one concept, inside a coursepack of cases.
Most Harvard simulations run 30 minutes to two hours and sit next to the case they illustrate, with a free Educator Account and a published per-student price. Capsim's whole-company simulations are built to carry a course or a workshop, not a single-concept session.
- Harvard Business PublishingYou need a published price before the first conversation.
Harvard lists a per-student price on every product, including the Marketplace and Hubro titles it sells. Capsim and Cesim quote, because the price depends on the product, the volume and the format; at Capsim, pricing is part of the demo conversation.
- Any of themYou prefer to evaluate through an instructor account.
Cesim offers an unlimited trial account on request, Marketplace offers a free instructor account and evaluation game, Hubro a free instructor account you can launch the same day, and Harvard a free Educator Account. Capsim starts with a 30-minute demo, because the first course comes with setup, training and a consultant shadowing the first delivery.
FAQ
Common questions when comparing Capsim
Cesim vs. Capsim: which is better?
Neither in general; it depends on the course. Cesim has the wider catalog (general, strategy, functional and industry titles, from a hotel to a bank to a telecom operator), runs Global Challenge in twelve languages, and lets the instructor set five to twelve rounds. Capsim has four configurations of one whole-company engine, each mapped to a course (strategy fundamentals, capstone, international, operations), with Comp-XM, a solo re-run of the simulation with board questions, to score each student at the end. For an industry-specific course or a class taught in Spanish or Mandarin, start with Cesim. For a strategy sequence that ends in a capstone and an assurance-of-learning exam, start with Capsim.
What are the best alternatives to Capsim?
For whole-company strategy simulations: Cesim (Global Challenge), Marketplace Simulations (Strategic Management through Strategic Corporate Management), and the Business Strategy Game and GLO-BUS, sold through McGraw Hill with a strategy textbook. For a shorter first strategy course, Hubro (Strategic Management). Harvard Business Publishing sells Marketplace and Hubro titles alongside its own short simulations. Pick by course: the table above lists each vendor's product for intro, strategy fundamentals, capstone, international, operations and MBA courses.
How does Capsim compare to Marketplace Simulations?
Both run competitive, team-based, whole-company simulations over several rounds, score the team on a balanced scorecard, and add AI tools for coaching and debriefs. Marketplace's catalog is broader by discipline (marketing, supply chain, entrepreneurship), its rounds are quarters, its scenario is a 3D-printed bicycle company, and its site is aimed at educators, with documented corporate use. Capsim's four simulations are configurations of one engine, its rounds are years, its product is a deliberately generic sensor, and the same simulations run facilitated leadership programs for companies. For individual assessment, Capsim's Comp-XM has each student re-run the simulation alone and answer board questions; Marketplace's COLA is a closed-book test on the team's position. Marketplace's editions sold through Harvard Business Publishing list a per-student price; Capsim discusses pricing in the demo.
How does Capsim compare to Hubro?
They're built for different depths. Hubro's Strategic Management runs four to twelve hours on a case about a jetpack manufacturer, with PESTEL, SWOT and the BCG matrix built in, and is positioned for a first strategy course; Hubro's own FAQ says it and Capstone serve different courses. The Capsim simulation for that course is CapsimCore, which carries a full strategy fundamentals course on the reports and modules students use again in Capstone. Hubro also sells finance, accounting and digital marketing simulations, with AI grading of written assignments in selected simulations and editions. Capsim scores each student with Comp-XM, a solo re-run of the simulation with board questions. Hubro's titles sold through Harvard Business Publishing list a per-student price; Capsim discusses pricing in the demo.
Which Capsim simulation fits which course?
CapsimCore for introductory business and strategy fundamentals, including programs whose students aren't business majors. Capstone for the strategic management capstone and MBA strategy. CapsimGlobal for international strategy. CapsimOps for operations and supply chain management. Functional courses that need the whole-company view can run CapsimCore; for functional introductory courses (management, marketing, accounting, finance, economics), the Gateway Courses inbox series adds short individual simulations.
Is Capsim only for capstone courses?
No. Capstone is the flagship and sits at the end of the program, but CapsimCore runs from a four-hour workshop to a full introductory course, with onboarding in about twenty minutes in its light configuration. CapsimGlobal and CapsimOps cover international and operations courses, and the inbox simulations cover gateway courses in about fifteen minutes each.
What is the best business simulation platform?
There isn't one for every course. For a whole-company strategy course with a separate individual exam, Capsim. For an industry-specific or multilingual course, Cesim. For marketing or supply-chain courses, Marketplace. For a short first strategy course, or a finance, accounting or digital marketing course, Hubro. For a single-session exercise beside a case, Harvard Business Publishing. Ask each vendor the same seven questions: what people should get better at, whether participants affect each other, how it's measured, how much time it takes, who runs it, whether everyone can use it, and what drives the cost. The guide to choosing a business simulation walks through them.
Does Capsim publish pricing?
No. Students can buy access directly, like a course text, or through the campus bookstore, or a program can cover it with a site license; corporate programs are priced per cohort. The price depends on the product, the volume and the format, so book a demo to discuss the simulation, course setup and pricing in one 30-minute conversation.
